Happy Autism Acceptance Month from this eccentric, artsy, fashion savvy, autistic lady!
It took me a long time to become self accepting. Before I knew I was autistic, I just assumed I was a failure. Harsh, but that’s how I felt: Like I couldn’t ever keep up with my peers, like I got too invested in my interests, like I was too fidgety, too easily overwhelmed, too sensitive.
Then I was diagnosed as autistic at age 23. It put SO much of my past into context! I have special interests, I stim, I’m extra sensitive to noise. Knowing this helps me move forward. It helps me understand my own boundaries. I’m not afraid to seek accommodations when I need them, whether it’s a fidget toy, ear plugs, weighted blankets or just taking a break.
I now feel that I live a more authentic, fulfilling life knowing I’m autistic 💖
